Big data…

At this week´s lecture in Writing for New Media, we talked about ethics and technology. This is an interesting topic in many ways because it is a subject that opens up for discussions.

Personally, I think the most interesting one is regarding how big data is treated by companies. Big data is the data that companies collect from our internet use. This video from Crash Course will explain it futher for those of you that are intrested.

One of the ethical issues that we discussed in class was that we do not know what information companies collect about us, and to who it might be sold. I do not know what you think, but I find this a little bit scary. However, this is not new information for me, but it is something that I barely reflect over. Is it the same for you? Or do you think about this while using your social media?

Big data has also been a topic in my marketing module. Instead of discussing the ethics, we learned how to use big data in marketing research. Using big data is something that I might do after my studies since I want to work with public relations. I  realize that some of you can perceive me as a hypocrite. Because earlier in the text, I stated my concerns about how big data can be used, still, I want to work inside that industry. Who knows, in the future, I might use your data in selling purpose!
